Working
My journey to Researchcraft has been a full circle – ending up in the same building as I had worked in at the start of my career!

I started off as a graduate trainee at Millward Brown when it was a small agency. I then ran a small marketing consultancy before moving to Taylor Nelson where I was a Founding Director of their Personal Care Division. After 7 years at TN, I moved back to Millward Brown where I enjoyed another 7 years as a Director before branching out with Researchcraft in 1997.

I’m pleased to say I’ve avoided a third 7 year itch and am still at Researchcraft and not intending to move anytime soon.

Playing
Being married to another market researcher might imply that I never get away from the job. But, away from work, my main passion is sailing. I have competed successfully (and still do, though not quite so successfully!) and spend much leisure time helping to run various sailing organisations. I have written a few books about sailing and even made a video about a particular section of the sport.

Thinking
But back to market research, the papers and conferences I’ve done include:

Is Beauty Skin Deep? (MRS Conference 1989) – an assessment of the differences between how consumers and dermatologists test and rate the performance of moisturisers.

Information or Communication? A Consumer Study Of Television Advertising (PAGB Conference and Publication, 1990) – looking at the extent to which written “health warnings” in TV adverts are taken in by viewers.

Resuscitating Cable Television (Admap & Research Effectiveness Awards 1997) – a case history about a programme of market research to assist the development of a cable TV brand, strategy & package.
